Osteopathy and Pregnancy

abstract Background

Specialized osteopathy for pregnant women in Milan

Pregnancy is an intense physiological process characterized by profound physical changes and transformations. Each stage of pregnancy is unique and may present challenges that can potentially compromise the overall well-being and joy of this journey.

This is why we offer a dedicated and specialized service to support women during this transformative phase of their lives.

First Quarter

Physiological Development

Hormones play a key role in the first trimester, preparing the woman's body for pregnancy through a complex interplay of local and systemic effects. Hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, and prolactin initiate physiological changes, including fluid retention, slowed digestion, skin changes, breast enlargement.

In the first trimester of pregnancy, while significant postural changes are not typically observed, the appearance of musculoskeletal pain may be linked to pre-existing conditions such as congenital anomalies, prior injuries, or closely spaced pregnancies.

The most common symptoms experienced during this phase include: Nausea, vomiting, reflux, hypotension, fatigue, and drowsiness.

Second Quarter

Adaptation and Wellbeing

The second trimester is often characterized by a period of increased well-being for many women. Symptoms experienced during the first trimester, such as nausea and fatigue, may subside. Hormonal levels tend to stabilize, and women often begin to feel fetal movements, a phenomenon known as quickening.

Physiologically, the body has generally adapted by the second trimester. However, external factors such as cultural and societal pressures can contribute to stress in pregnant women.

Endocrine modifications during pregnancy induce changes in connective tissue, resulting in increased joint laxity, hypermobility, and instability. These alterations, combined with the progressive weight gain, breast enlargement, and shifts in the body's center of gravity, contribute to an increased lumbar lordosis. Concurrently, the expanding uterus exerts pressure on abdominal organs.

Low Back Pain, sciatica, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Constipation, Urinary incontinence, Leg swelling are the most common symptoms.

Third Quarter

Overload

The latter stages of pregnancy are characterized by significant postural adaptations, often referred to as the period of increased load. The growing fetus and uterus exert increasing pressure on the abdominal organs, leading to compression and congestion. This can manifest as difficulty in diaphragmatic descent, compression of the bladder, and circulatory challenges.

Common symptoms during this period include spinal pain, sciatica, neck pain, groin and pelvic pain, shortness of breath, edema, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, urinary incontinence, constipation, nausea, and reflux.
